Yuriko Matsuda ceramics
All the works that came from her hands , detailed coloured vegetables, fruits , high heeled feet, buttocks were objects to be placed somewhere. Actually very normal for ceramics however I had the wish to hang her works from a wall. It was not just a way of getting this old acquaintance in our stable but also probably caused by the long years of only dealing with flat works.On my request of making masks she reacted positively.I had in mind something like an exhibition in a masquerade fashion however this turned out to be completely different it awoke a kind of Arcimboldo spirit in the artist resulting in the artist making vegetable portraits. Surprisingly these were real faces!
In the case of mask expressions and character are hidden and whether one likes it or not one has to imagine. In the case of the fruits and veggies the masks were Goblin like , in way it had a feel of our ancient ancestors, raised and cropped in the fields.
Really strange and funny. I even would say that these fruits and veggies masks were harbouring a unique Japanese cultural aspect. People have more than anything else an interest in faces and this will artistically also be a most satisfying core theme.
I look forward to this show opening a new chapter in the artist`s life and to give our Gallery a fresh inspirational breeze.
